Honoring the past, empowering the future
Black History Month is celebrated in February every year. This is a time for reflection, education, and appreciation of the profound impact Black individuals have had on American history, culture, and society. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, we honor this month by amplifying the voices, stories, and legacies that have shaped history and continue to inspire future generations.
Since its inception in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, Black History Month has evolved into a nationwide celebration, highlighting the achievements of Black leaders, visionaries, and everyday changemakers. This year, BBBSPS is focusing on the power of mentorship, recognizing the programs and mentors that have shaped history and those who continue to make a difference in their communities today. We believe in the power of mentorship to uplift and empower, ensuring that the next generation has the guidance and support to create their own lasting legacies.
We’re committed to supporting Black youth in our community.
Alpha Phi Alpha is a group mentoring program co-hosted by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity of Tacoma. The program provides a safe place for young people to share their thoughts about current events and freely explore ideas with BIPOC leaders. Alpha Forum introduced the first Business Literacy session, which kicked off in August 2024. During this session, mentors used a creative “Shark Tank” strategy to help youth explore business ideas and concepts. The Alpha Forum’s Business Literacy session has been a truly impactful experience for these young men. It’s more than just a learning opportunity – it’s a chance to spark creativity, encourage entrepreneurship, and nurture the next generation of leaders. |

Through weekly mentoring sessions at Spanaway and Cedarcrest Middle Schools, we aim to build resilience, share valuable life skills, and create a path for young people toward a brighter future. |
