Women’s History Month 2025 – Big Sisters Share Their Wisdom for Mentorship

March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the resilience, achievements, and impact of women throughout history. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, we celebrate not only the remarkable women who have shaped our world but also the mentors who continue to uplift and inspire the next generation.

This year, we want to highlight Big Sisters, mentors who dedicate their time, wisdom, and compassion to guiding Little Sisters toward a brighter future. Through their experiences, they have gained valuable insights about mentorship, leadership, and the power of women supporting women.

The power of showing up and being present

I also make sure my Little Sisters knows that she can trust me and that I’ll always have her back. – Big Sister Karen

Big Sisters start their mentorship journey wondering if they have enough to offer, but it’s as simple as showing up. Whether it’s cheering on a Little at a school event, offering a listening ear after a tough day, or simply sharing a meal together, these small, consistent acts of support build trust and confidence in their Little Sisters.

Listening is just as powerful as leading

My Little Sister and I are both introverts, but Liv has opened up to me about her hobbies and favorite music. We realized we have so much in common, and just by listening to her stories, we’ve built this really natural connection. – Big Sister Alex

Mentorship is not only about giving advice but also creating a safe space for Littles to be heard. Many Big Sisters have realized that by listening, they can help their Littles navigate their own challenges, build problem-solving skills, and develop the confidence to make decisions for themselves.

A mentoring relationship is about lifting each other up

Women’s History Month reminds us that progress happens when women support and uplift one another. Big Sisters have proved that even the smallest encouragement can make a lasting impact on the Littles’ life. Small actions from Bigs can help Littles ignite their own potential and mentors play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of female leaders.
