On a gray winter day in Seattle, one simple question says everything: “Just one more goal?”
That moment, shared between Big Brother John and his Little, Devante, was recently featured in The Seattle Times, shining a light on the quiet, powerful impact of mentorship through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound.
Their story is filled with small moments that mean everything: muddy soccer fields, laughter across generations, shared books, warm bowls of pho, and a steady presence that tells a young person, you matter. John isn’t just spending time with Devante, he’s believing in him, encouraging him, and walking alongside him as he grows.
For Devante, mentorship brings confidence, joy, and the reassurance that someone is always in his corner. For John, it’s purpose, connection, and the deep reward of showing up consistently. Together, they remind us that mentorship doesn’t have to be extraordinary to be life-changing, it just has to be real.
We are deeply grateful to John for being a dedicated Big, and to Devante and his family for trusting us with their story. We’re also thankful to The Seattle Times for helping share the heart of mentorship with our wider community.
