We’re proud to share a recent feature from YPCommunities, which sat down with our own Keshona Lawrence, Marketing & Communications Director at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, to talk about mentorship, community, and what it really takes to change a young person’s life.
As Keshona put it: “Every young person has incredible potential, and one strong relationship can help unlock it.”
On the Challenges Young People Face
Keshona spoke candidly about the systemic barriers many of our Littles navigate, inequitable access to resources, underfunded schools, limited exposure to career pathways and networks. “We can’t solve all of that overnight,” she shared, “but what we can do is make sure a young person has someone in their corner.”
On What Success Looks Like
For Keshona, success isn’t measured in big moments. It’s measured in consistency. “It’s not about big moments, it’s about consistency over time. That’s where the real impact happens”, whether that’s a Little building confidence and starting to see new possibilities, or a Big showing up, week after week, and knowing that it matters.
On the Biggest Misconception About Mentorship
One thing Keshona wants more people to understand: you don’t need to have everything figured out to be a mentor. “Mentorship is really about being present, listening, and showing up consistently,” she explained. The impact comes from small, everyday moments , not from having all the answers.
On the Power of Partnership
Keshona also highlighted why partnerships like the one between BBBSPS and YPCommunities matter so much. These collaborations bring new people into the work and create more ways for the community to engage, through events, volunteering, or donation drives. “It’s really about expanding the circle around young people,” she said. “The more people who are aware, engaged, and invested, the more relationships we can build.”
