Dreaming BIG in Tacoma: Building futures through access, exposure, and opportunity

This August, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound (BBBSPS) gave youth in Tacoma the chance to dream bigger through powerful group mentorship experiences. From aviation to fire service, Littles in our Tacoma programs explored new career paths, built connections, and discovered what’s possible when they have access to role models and opportunities. These moments remind us why youth mentorship in Tacoma is so important.

On August 7, youth from our Big LYFT and Alpha Forum programs attended the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) Youth Day. They tried flight simulators, met Black aviation professionals, and learned how teamwork, science, and dedication keep planes safe. The highlight came when young pilots, just a few years older than our Littles, shared their journeys. One Little said, “I never thought about aviation before. But after today, absolutely.” It was a powerful example of how exposure can spark new dreams.

Just weeks later, on August 22, the Tacoma group toured Fire Station 1. Firefighters welcomed them with hands-on activities—from climbing into fire engines to practicing with gear. The boys also heard directly from Tacoma’s Fire Chief about her journey to leadership, showing them what commitment and courage can achieve. The day ended at Buddy’s Chicken and Waffles, where Littles not only enjoyed a meal but also experienced the impact of Black entrepreneurship and community leadership in Tacoma.

Both experiences show the power of mentorship and opportunity. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, we believe every child has incredible potential, and with the guidance of a mentor, they can see futures they never imagined before. You can be part of this movement. If you’ve ever thought about giving back, now is the time.
