3 ways mentors can support Littles during Back-to-school season

Back-to-school season is full of excitement and fresh opportunities. It also brings new routines, new environments, and the challenge of adapting to change. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, we know how important it is for young people to have support during this transition. With a mentor by their side, Littles step into the school year with confidence, encouragement, and someone who believes in them every step of the way.

Here are three powerful ways mentors support Littles during back-to-school season:

1. Building confidence where it matters most

Walking into a classroom on the first day can feel big and unfamiliar. Mentors help Littles believe in themselves by offering encouragement at just the right time-before a test, during a new activity, or when they’re exploring new interests. A simple “I believe in you” or “You can do it” can inspire a Little to try out for a team, speak up in class, or take pride in their learning. Confidence in school often grows into confidence in life.

2. Creating healthy routines and habits

Success in school often comes down to consistency. Many Bigs help Littles build routines that make the day smoother. During their outings, they might read together, practice study skills, or find balance between schoolwork and fun. These habits give Littles the structure and tools they need to thrive, while also teaching responsibility, focus, and perseverance.

3. A mentor who listens and supports

One of the most valuable things a mentor can give is presence. Littles know their Big is someone they can share their experiences with—whether that’s the excitement of joining a new club, questions about homework, or dreams for the future. Having a caring adult who listens and supports them helps Littles feel understood, valued, and encouraged. As one of our Littles shared: “Having my Big makes me feel like I’m not alone. I know someone always has my back.”

During the back-to-school season, we stand by our Littles, giving them the confidence to grow, the support to adapt, and the encouragement to thrive. With mentors by their side, Littles discover not only their potential, but also the joy of knowing they are never alone on the journey.
