Starting your mentoring journey with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound
You’ve taken the first step to becoming a mentor. You filled out the application, completed training, went through the thoughtful matching process, and now you’re officially a Big.
Becoming a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound (BBBSPS) is a powerful commitment to supporting young people in your community. But like any new experience, your first 90 days as a Big might bring questions, surprises, and meaningful milestones.
Whether you’re matched with a Little in Seattle, Tacoma, or a surrounding area, here are 3 things you can expect in your first 90 days as a mentor, and how we support you every step of the way.
Building trust takes time—and that’s okay
In the early days of your match, your main goal is simple but powerful: build trust. You don’t need to be a superhero or a motivational speaker. You just need to show up consistently and authentically.
You can expect small wins: a shared laugh, your Little opening up more each week, or getting excited about your next outing. Trust takes time, but with patience, it grows into something meaningful.
“At first, my Little was super quiet, but now we have inside jokes, and they actually look forward to hanging out. That moment of connection meant everything.” — Big, South King County
You’ll Have Support from BBBSPS
Mentoring a child is rewarding, and at times, it can also feel a little overwhelming. That’s why you’re never alone on this journey.
During your first 90 days (and beyond), your Match Support Specialist will check in regularly. They’ll answer your questions, help navigate challenges, and share ideas for activities and conversations. You’ll also have access to free match activities, community events, and curated resources to help you build your relationship.
All active matches receive monthly support calls and access to fun, free events like Mariners games, art workshops, and more!
You’ll realize the impact, even in small moments
You may not feel it right away, but your time is making a difference. Whether it’s helping with homework, showing up for a soccer game, or simply asking how their day was — you’re creating a space where your Little feels seen and supported.
In fact, studies show that kids in mentoring programs like BBBS are more likely to improve in school, build stronger relationships, and believe in their own potential. Here is our research: https://inspirebig.org/long-term-impact-of-mentors/
And here’s the best part – it only takes a few hours a month to make that kind of impact!
