3 Stages of the Matching Process to Become a Mentor

Becoming a Big through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound is a powerful way to make a lasting difference in a child’s life.

Child safety is our top priority, trust and transparency are at the heart of everything we do. Every Big goes through a thoughtful, dedicated matching process. This ensures that each mentor is carefully paired with a Little who shares similar values, interests, and goals.

Stage 1: Apply & Interview

What you’ll do:

  • Submit an Inquiry Form to share basic info and get started
  • Complete a full application, including: Background information, background check, three references (These can be friends, family, coworkers, supervisors, or mentors, anyone who can speak to your character and reliability.), agreement to BBBS policies
  • Take a short online training about what it means to be a mentor
  • Schedule a 90-minute interview with a BBBS team member. We’ll talk about your lifestyle, interests, background, and the kind of Little who’d be a great fit for you

Our mentors meet one-on-one with youth, which makes it even more important that we build each match with intention, care, and integrity. It takes time, but its time invested in building safe, meaningful relationships that help kids feel seen, supported, and inspired.

Stage 2: Training & Get Ready

Once your application and interview are complete, what happens next:

  • Attend a virtual pre-match training: Learn about youth safety, communication, setting boundaries, and mentoring tips
  • Get Approved & Reach “Ready-to-Be-Matched” status: Our team will now actively look for a Little who shares your interests and values

This step is all about setting you up for success. We want you to feel confident before meeting your Little.” — Amy, Enrollment Matching Specialist

Stage 3: Get Matched

Here’s how the matching process works:

  • Proposal Call (15–30 min): We’ll introduce a potential Little and share their background, personality, and why we think it’s a good fit
  • Guardian Approval: If you’re ready to move forward, we’ll share a little about you and your background with the Little and their parent or guardian
  • Virtual Introduction (45 min): If they agree to the match, we’ll set up a time to introduce you to your Little and their guardian, guided by a BBBS staff member. We’ll walk through expectations, safety, and help you plan your first outing.

Once you’re matched, the experience is unforgettable, full of connection, joy, and the chance to help a young person discover their full potential.

After you’re matched: Ongoing support

Our team is here for you every step of the way. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Monthly check-ins during your first year
  • Access to free outings and events (sports, museums, community activities)
  • Ongoing advice and support whenever you need it
