Mentoring is about more than just spending time together, it’s about providing unwavering support, fostering growth, and being a steady presence through life’s ups and downs. For Karen and Sahmari, their journey began many years ago when Sahmari was just 8 years old. Now, she is about to turn 18. From the early days, they shared laughter and enjoyed fun outings together. Gradually, their bond grew into a connection built on trust, resilience, and unconditional care.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we truly value the time and effort Bigs and Littles put in to making mentoring work. This story stands as a powerful testament to the lasting impact of mentorship and the resilience it inspires.
Providing Support and Guidance Through Difficult Moments
From the very start, Karen and Sahmari’s relationship was built on trust, nurtured through consistent presence and meaningful conversations.
“When we first got together, it was all about having fun and getting to know each other. We’d meet every week, and I’d try to make it about things she enjoyed, building that sense of connection.” – Karen reflected on their early years.
As the years passed, Karen continuously showed her caring and unconditional love by giving support and being presence for her Little Sister. However, the COVID-19 pandemic was especially difficult, constraining in-person meetings and adding to the challenges in Sahmari’s life.
“When everything moved online, it was really hard for her. She wasn’t an online learner.” Karen explained. Karen didn’t give up, she put her efforts into communicating and making sure Sahmari knew her Big Sister was always there. “Sometimes she answers and sometimes she doesn’t.” Karen noted and she didn’t push, she let Sahmari respond when she felt ready.
Karen remembered how Sahmari faced difficulties after returning to school in person. “Student’s coming out of COVID, who’s already struggling and having some social issues, she was very reluctant to go to school ” Karen shared. During this time, Karen stayed involved, listened to her stories, shared advice and made sure that Sahmari knew someone was advocating for her. Karen was always there, encouraging her Little Sister to stay hopeful despite the setbacks.

Karen recalled how, over time, these small but consistent efforts became an important part of their relationship, stability. Her support during Sahmari’s difficult times helped strengthen their bond. Karen stayed present and reminded Sahmari that she was there whenever she was needed.
Navigating Mental Health and Family Dynamics
During their calls with BBBS Match Support Specialist, Karen opened up about how she was beside Samari in some of her hardest moments. “There was a time when she told me about these difficulties she was having,” Karen reflected. “She opened up about some really personal things.” These conversations highlighted the significant role Karen, as a Big Sister, showed up in Sahmari’s life. Karen didn’t try to fix everything but instead listened, supported her feelings, and reminded her that she wasn’t alone. She also helped connect Sahmari with counseling support.
Like it is for most teens, there also were times when communication at home was strained. “There was a night when she called me after a big argument” Karen shared. Big Sister then told her: ‘I’m coming to get you.’ They had dinner, and Karen let her talk. “She told me things she hadn’t shared before because she was afraid, I would see her differently.” That conversation deepened their bond even further.
Karen’s support has helped build a foundation of trust and confidence in Sahmari’s life. Many teens struggle with opening up to their parents, but Bigs can play a supportive role in that. “I always try to encourage her to communicate with her dad,” Karen explained. “But I also make sure she knows that she can trust me and that I’ll always have her back.”
